Hey everyone,
I only joined the group today so just wanted to say hi. I finally got told today by the hospital that I have IBS but I have suspected as much for the past 3/4 years if not more really. I blame becoming a teacher! Ever since I qualified it's got progressively worse to the point it's now every morning for a start and I often leave the house feeling very sick and uncomfortable. I also get severe attacks sometimes when I eat- literally within mins but it's not an allergy as it doesn't always happen with the same foods. I'm looking forward to getting some support and being able to support others through this group. But as a newbie I've got a lot of reading and am waiting now to see a dietician (spelling?) and am also having colonoscopy as I have other symptons too.
Hope everyone is ok.
Cheers

Welcome Steeleye! I'm fairly new here too. I'm currently training to be a teacher and I must say your post has worried me a little. I've had IBS for 5 and a bit years and I'm just about to finish my second year of training. I cope with my IBS when I'm on placement but it takes a lot of effort. I always try to make sure that I don't have 2 lessons together but eventually I'll have to get used to it.

Any way, I hope you get some support here.

Well as you know from your placements teaching is a stressful job and that doesn't go very well with IBS but I do let myself get very stressed about work sometimes without needing to. I think because I teach drama I then have the pressures of the school production and all extra curricular stuff I also don't like confrontation which is sometimes a big part of the job- sadly! Try and not fret IBS affects all of us differently and you sound likle you have some coping strategies. Good luck with the training.

Hey steeleye, I'm really new too, so I just thought I'd say hi! Hope everything goes well with the dietician (best way to go, they know more than doctors) Don't be put off by all the reading - it's the best way of figuring out what you need to do for yourself (cos everyone suffers differently). I've been living with IBS for 11 years and I still look for more stuff to read up on!

And oh yeah, welcome to the site!

Hi Steeleye!

I've been a member of this place for a while, and all the members are great!!! Very helpful and supportive, so welcome!!

Wow, being a teacher with IBS must be difficult!! But I'm really glad you are doing it!! I've heard the dietician thing is very helpful and can help eliminate certain foods, but rememer with IBS, it's never the same! sometimes you can eat it, and sometimes you can't!!

Keep us posted!

Thanks, Steeleye! It can be stressful but I've had fantastic placements so far. The biggy next year will be the real test.

I can imagine that there is a lot of pressure placed on you for the school productions. There is a lot more work invloved than people think!

I was just thinking while reading your intro.... I've had IBS since I was a little kid ... and every body has always had an opinion on why. Stress....food allergy....eating too much....eating too little....exercising too much/too little....depression....it always has to have a reason. But they really don't know why anyone has it. Well, I have had one Rhuematologist say it's part of Fibromyalgia. Which they didn't diagnose till just a few years ago. I didn't know everyone didn't hurt in all those 'pressure points' that they check! I've had every GI test ever invented in the last 40 years. Although, they insist on colonoscopies..I personnally hate them and think that if we can put people in space... we should be able to think of a more humane way to test people. You have my total empathy! Hope you feel better soon. Take care, Sue

Hi,
Thanks for the reply Suzanne. I found what you had written about Fibromyalgia really interesting. I too have every ache going although not all the time. I have had physio for the last year and a half and constant chiro appointments for the last nine months. I don't know much about it- what are the usual pressure points? I'm currently going through the phase that when I lie down to go to bed I can't lie on my back because it feels as though there is a huge weight crushing down on my hips and lower back. I keep getting this and it really hurts as well as the upset in the stomach. It may be totally unconnected but found what you said interesting. How did you go about getting it diagnosed?
And yeah as for the humanity aspect of a colonoscopy!!!! :(
Cheers
