Hi everyone,
Just wondering, does anyone use psyllium husks? If so, do you think they are useful? I have been using them for about 6 months now, after being hospitalised after a really bad IBS time. I had diarrhea on and off for about 6 weeks and I lost about 12kgs. The bowel specialist told me to take psyllium husks in water, as they would bulk up the stool. I also can't tolerate fructose and dairy. Anyway, I felt like I was travelling along ok, my bowel wasn't so crazy all the time, I was going to the toilet in what seemed like a normal way, no bleeding, etc. I also drink a lot of water, so that I don't get a blockage. So I feel like I am doing everything right, and yet in the past fortnight, things have gone bad again. I will take some psyllium, and get really bad cramps, feels like they are on my hips, and my lower back, and my stomach makes these really gross noises. So I take some buscopan. I don't know if buscopan makes you constipated, but anyway, I don't go to the toilet for about 2 days, but I feel like I need to go. I'll get this really hot, foul smelling wind for the 2 days, then I will finally go to the toilet and it will be this explosive diarrhea. I feel like I empty my stomach out. Then the cycle starts all over again. It's weird. And I don't know who to talk to about it, as the doctors never seem to know what to say, they just say, "That's ibs."

Another question to all of you, does your ibs affect your mental health?

Thanks :)

Soluble fibre does not fix IBS, it just hides the symptoms for a while.
IBS causes mental illness because your digestion does not work, your brain is not getting fed, and you become extremely stressed. Then of course IBS gets worse.

Thanks Brahms and Yasmin. I am still feeling pretty bad. Before, I was always having diarrhea0 (IBS-D), but I have noticed in the past month or so, I'm alternating between diarrhea and constipation. There's just no 'happy medium.' And I have noticed that the psyllium seems to give me a lot of painful gas. I don't know what to do. I am going to the doctor on Wednesday for other stuff, maybe I will bring it up. But everyone on here has experienced similar things firsthand, so I feel like I can say more on here than I would to my doctor. I feel embarassed about it all. I was reading about something called bentonite clay. Have you tried it? I hope you are feeling well. :)

hi kelly, donot wonder if ur doc says that "its just ibs"... he really doesn have an answer for this..i m a medical student going to be a doc in few days...i have gone thrugh lots of texts..i m also suffering from ibs for last 2 yrs....n over that i have a refractory one which doesn go for months....its a functional disorder ....i mean related to brain....thre is a brain gut axis...which when get disturbed leads to this disorder...little is known about its aetiology ..so no definate treatment can be defined...i guess u have gone through all investigations required to rule out other causes like an organic disease...if they all r normal then ur doc is not wrong if he says that "its ibs" because ibs is not a diagnosis per se...it is a diagnosis of exclusion...its worth nothing running to different doctor....i will better advise u to stick to one ..n have a regular follow up...
talking about psyllium husk ..its benificial both with constipation as well as diarrhoea...but mainly used for constipation..as it is a bulk forming agent...in diarrhoea it helps by absorbing excessive fluid from ur gut lumen..hence decreasing the volume of the stool...however initially it can cause some problem like gas n bloating but in long term it will help u...
treatment advice that i can give u ..first keep away from stress...more u will think of ur problem more u will suffer...i know its difficult to get it away from ur mind when u have got a problem...but atleast give a try
aviod milk products...but u can take curd n youghurt .....u can try colospa retard, which contains mebeverine...i have taken it n it has helped me a lot..take a prebiotic-probiotic specially the one containing"bifidobacterium infantis"....for gas u can take a pinch of "asafoetida"...it will surely help u.....n in case nothing helps u will have to try an antidepressant....not because u r in deppression..but these drugs have a role independent of their antideppessent action..n they r also given in very low dose as compared to a patient of deppression..dont panic about their side effects...now a days very safe congeners r available.....if u have neother query u can freely ask me..i will try to help u of my best

You need to shop around for what soluble fibre works best for you - there are many different varieties that work differently for everyone - personally I use Acacia fibre (which you can buy from helpforibs.com - there are several links to that site on here) as I found other soluble fibre "products" just bloat me out because their primarily designed for IBS-C, not IBS-D or IBS-A (which I have) and of course, always make sure you drink plenty of water with whatever soluble fibre supplement you take

Can I ask what your diet is like? because, you can take all the supplement you like, but if your diet isn't stable and safe for IBS, then no amount of supplements will help you

IBS varies from person to person, but my diet cuts out (completely), Red meat, Egg Yolk, and artificial sweetners, and I limit my dairy to approx 1 glass sized serving of skimmed milk a day, and limit my coffee intake to 1 a day (maximum, I'm currently trying to cut this down aswell, but I do love my coffee! lol!) - I increase my intake of natural soluble fibres (like white bread, pasta, rice, and certain fruits and vegetables), and make sure those are the staples of my diet - I also live on peppermint, fennel and ginger root teas!

It can take years to figure out exactly what's causing your pains and discomforts, and doctors don't always have the answers (unfortunately) - my doctor couldn't figure out what was wrong with me for 8 years, and then put me on a diet that completely messed up my blood sugar, so much so that I blacked out at the wheel - very dangerous indeed!

I hope this information is helpful to you, and I hope that you're on your way to reducing your symptoms and feeling better!

Hello! I take probiotics. Florastor works REALLY well. Have you tired that? Also, diet is important. Look up the Paleo Diet, it really is an amazing diet. Lots of info on Google and around here as well. Feel better! Glad you are on this site!
