The other day I noticed I had white mucus wrapped around my stool like a web. It was very sticky on the tissue paper. (Sorry this is so weird to talk about..., argh.) I have never had that before. I freaked out a little bit. Before that I had had no bowel movements for a week. Does that contribute somehow? I battle with IBS-C and IBS-D. It is a irregular cycle.

Today I went to the bathroom and had some more mucus, but it was orange-red color. That is even more scary! Does that mean there is blood in the mucus?

I'm making a doctor appt tomorrow. I'm hoping to get a referral for a specialist. I've never been to a gastroenterologist before (stupid, i know).

Has anyone had any experiences with this?
What was the cause?
How did you treat it?
Is it a serious thing or common for IBS?

(Just want to know from people who have had this and not researching the internet. I have been doing research, but nothing that is consistent.)

Thanks

My stools were like this at the very beginning of which I can only describe, I guess, as IBS. Saying that, I don't get gripping pains or bloating. Is the orange-red blood? Sometimes I still see the mucus, but not very often. My Dr told me I have one very small pile up inside. I think it bleeds almost everytime I go to the toilet which is why I get bright red stuff (blood) when I go. I don't think there is a cure for IBS. However, I'm doing a diet (which is quite hard to follow), that is high protein, low fibre, it slows everything down. It also means you can't eat any cereals, so that's not only bread, but pasta, rice you name it. No fibrous veggies like carrots, parsnips, potatoes etc. You are also avoiding gluten. I've been doing it for 10 days and I only go once or twice first thing (still not normally) but that's it for the rest of the day. For more info, see the Facebook IBS (Iritable Bowel Syndrome) Support Group.

In my experience, you should be eating more fiber not less

I'm not sure anymore! Originally I was told you need to be eating the right fibre, i.e soluble fibre (eg, porridge oats) as opposed to unsoluble fibre (eg. bran), I'm sure you can find whole lists on the internet of the different fibre foods. However, the above diet is based on this paleo diet (see the Paleo Diet group on here) and I do think its the key. Brahms (who set up the Paleo Diet group), lists his website on there and if you read what's there you'll see why he believes in the high protein, low fibre diet. What's good about doing the diet is that it cures you, then you can see the effects (like I did yesterday) when you eat for example a donut! 3 hours later I had to go to the toilet, whereas I had been going all day previously with nothing till the following morning. I don't understand why everyone is talking about the Paleo Diet on here, but not actually trying it? It's the same on Facebook. Surely it's worth a go!?

Colitis is when you have mucus on your stools.
